A Grassroots Kayak Fishing Club Out Of Australia

Kayak Fishing Australia

Yak Hunters is a community organisation consisting of six separate groups, each representing a different state of Australia, these are: New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.

The goal of our organisation is to promote kayak based fishing for all ages and abilities, as well as sustainable fishing practices. We want to facilitate a love of fishing combined with knowledge of how to care for our oceans and waterways and all the creatures living within them.

What Is Kayak Fishing?

Kayak fishing, as its name suggests, is the art of fishing from a kayak. Kayak fishing is not a new activity, having been practised by Inuit people of the Arctic for generations. However, in recent years it has gained popularity as a fun way to engage in sport fishing in both fresh and saltwater.

Kayaks used for fishing are specially designed to accommodate all necessary fishing gear. These additions include rod holders, built-in coolers, GPS receivers, equipment mounts, live bait holders, and more. Pedal-powered kayaks are often preferred for kayak fishing as this leaves the hands free for fishing without the need to paddle with an oar.

The techniques used for fishing from a kayak are similar to those used for fishing from a larger boat, you may choose to cast off from a seated position or while standing. Many fishing kayaks have wide beams to increase lateral stability and decrease the risk of overturning.

Why Kayak Fishing?

Kayak fishing has many benefits over motorised boat fishing. Kayaks are eco-friendly watercraft, they are easily transported, are lightweight and offer a great mix of fun and exercise. They also have minimal upkeep costs and are not required to be registered.

It also gives you the opportunity to enter small waterways such as lakes and rivers that are not accessible by foot or where motorised boats would not be permitted or suitable.

Kayak fishing provides a unique way to enjoy fishing away from the shore without the need for owning and maintaining a large boat.

Who Can Enjoy Kayak Fishing?

Kayak fishing is great for keen fishers of all ages. It is a great family activity and makes outdoor recreation fun year-round. While there are no limits to age, we of course recommend that all participants in this activity have the ability to swim and knowledge of essential water safety.

Larger kayaks can often accommodate a parent and a child and, as a low impact activity, it’s well suited for mature aged fishing enthusiasts also. Joining a kayak fishing club adds to the experience and makes it even more enjoyable.
